In what’s being billed as a UK first, the 20 mile ‘Man Vs Coast’ will see competitors running 20 miles from St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall, to Land’s End.

But along the way they’ll also have to take part in coasteering – an activity that involves low level rock climbing, sea swimming, and cliff jumps into the Atlantic Ocean and Celtic Sea.

CoasteeringThe event is the brainchild of Rat Race Adventure Sports, and the firm’s founder Jim Mee says he’s taken the concept of traditional obstacle-based runs and put it into one of the wildest places in Britain.

He says: “Coasteering took off in a big way here in the mid-to-late Noughties and has since become a really fun way of exploring the rugged UK coastline, as you climb and traverse across slippery rocks, the waves licking your heels, before hurling yourself into the briny.

“It’s particularly popular with thrill-seeking hen parties and stag dos.

“But so far no-one has taken running and coasteering and melded them into one event… until now!

“There are several swim-run events in the UK, where competitors essentially swim between islands. But they’re quite niche and you need to be as good at swimming as you are at running.

“For our Man Vs Coast event, though, you don’t need to be a brilliant swimmer – but you do have to make a few ‘dramatic’ entrances into the water…and you’ll definitely get wet!

“We hope it’s an innovative concept, and not just a first for us, a first for the UK, too.”

CoasteeringThe event is due to take place on Saturday 7th July next summer 2018, with bookings already open. All buoyancy aids will be provided and a dedicated water safety crew will prepped and ready.

Mr Mee is hoping competitors ‘make a weekend of it’, saying the subsequent afterparty will have the family-friendly buzz of a mini festival.

He adds: “This is a full day’s outing on rugged ground with the sea never far away and in multiple occasions, you will be in it too.

“Expect hands-on rock scrambling, jumps, short swims and a solid outing in the legs on the run. A standard road-run, this is not.

“Unlike lots of our other races, with Man Vs Coast obstacles are largely provided by Mother Nature and consist of sea-based challenges and shore-based activity.

“You could say that we have taken the concept of obstacle-based runs and put it into the wild places of Britain.”

Registration will be based in Penzance, which is around 5 to 10 miles from the Start and the Finish venues, between them both.

Registration is on Friday 6th July from approximately 2pm until approximately 10pm.
