‘Way of the Wildcard’ tells the story of four unique athletes who achieve sporting success in the most unlikely of circumstances
From serving a life sentence in prison, to smashing world rowing records, triathlete John McAvoy is one of the unlikely heroes profiled in Red Bull’s ‘The Way of the Wildcard’ series. The four-part series, which launched yesterday, shows that with dedication and the right motivation, anyone can go above and beyond to achieve their goal.
Included in the series is FMB legend Casey Brown, who faces a steep learning curve to intergrate herself into modern society; kayaker Sadat Kawawa who works as a tour guide in return for lessons to help him compete against worlds best; and the infamous O’Donovan brothers who set out to smash elitist stereotypes in rowing on the biggest stage there is.
The episodes will be available to view on Red Bull’s YouTube Channel on the following dates:
- John McAvoy – Available NOW!
- Casey Brown – Wednesday 25th April
- Sadat Kawawa – Wednesday 2nd May
- O’Donovan Brothers – Wednesday 9th May
In the first episode, John McAvoy turned to sport while serving a double life sentence for armed robbery. When the news filtered through of the loss of his best friend on the outside, he knew it was now or never to do something positive with his life:
Speaking about the Wildcard series, John said “What changed it all for me was finding out he had been killed after a police chase in Holland. At that moment I realised I had to turn my life around, so I turned to fitness and didn’t look back. When I got released from prison at the end of 2012, just after the Olympics, I was absolutely driven to make the most out of my body, constantly chasing time that I’d lost.
I’m really proud to be involved in the series. The way my episode ends is so powerful, I just hope it gets a positive reaction.”
Way of the Wildcard is a Red Bull Media House production created in association with Just So.
