A new running initiative is taking the women’s running community by storm.
Aimed at helping ladies break free from the road and take their running into the mountains, Girls on Hills Ltd, is a guided trail and fell running company based in Glencoe, Scotland.
“We seek to empower women with the knowledge and skills they need to be independent in the mountains and encourage a spirit of exploration,” says company Director, Keri Wallace.
Runners can book for 1 or 2 days and will explore the wild trails and mountains of the Glencoe area with experienced local guides. The courses cover navigation skills, route-planning, equipment, nutrition, training tips and safety advice for running in the mountain environment – all with experienced local guides and low ratios. These events are suitable for all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced runners.
“Whether you fancy trails through the glens or technical mountain running, the chosen route will depend on the weather, your experience and your specific aspirations for the weekend – but all runners will experience the wilderness and rugged beauty of Glencoe, as we take the ‘trail less travelled’ through breath-taking mountain scenery” says Keri.
The company also takes bookings for private guided runs (for two plus persons) and offers gift vouchers for those looking to spoil or inspire a loved-one.
Girls on Hills run very popular mountain navigation skills courses too – just for the ladies. “We don’t deliver women’s-only courses because women are poor navigators, lack spatial awareness or require some special style of teaching!” says Keri. “Research shows that women learn and sometimes perform better in a gender-specific environment – plus some ladies just prefer it that way!”
The Girls on Hills ‘experience’
Girls on Hills is a no-frills experience – accommodation and food are not provided, allowing you the flexibility to match the weekend to your own logistics and budget. “We don’t believe that women are motivated to run by the reward of prosecco, cake or massage. Our ladies run for the same reasons that men do!” Says Keri. “At Girls on Hills, we are runners and our company ethos is a celebration of the simplicity, freedom and headspace that comes with trail running. And where better to enjoy that than in the mountains.”
