The rugby team we all want to join!
Every day there are new statistics on the worrying lack of time young children spend outdoors. Indeed a recent survey revealed that over the Easter holidays youngsters spent over 6 days using electronic gadgets. However this isn’t the case for the Bishop Auckland Under 13’s Rugby team.
The U13’s team at Bishop Aukland RUFC is no ordinary rugby squad. In addition to being dedicated sportsmen they moonlight as young adventurers. Thanks to a huge effort from coaches and volunteers the boys are receiving fantastic opportunities to try out a spectrum of adventurous outdoor activities, from rock climbing to kayaking.
Indeed not even poor weather conditions deter this team. When weather affects training facilities at the club the squad are taken to a local climbing and trampolining centre.
“The outdoors is important in every aspect of the boys’ lives”, says one of the coaches, Paul Brookes. “Our goal for the team is to create an environment where the boys can not only express themselves through physical activity but also have a strong bond with one another.”
At the end of each training season the boys have the chance to attend an outdoor adventure weekend in association with a local organisation, Outdoor Ambition. Here the team are placed outside their comfort zone, encouraging them to try experiences many would not otherwise have the chance to.
With such extensive outdoor skills under their belt they will soon be giving Bear Grylls a run for his money!
