This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Berkhamsted Walk in Hertfordshire which raises vital funds for The Children’s Society.
The Berkhamsted Walk is a beautifully picturesque sponsored walk that takes place on Sunday 13 May during bluebell season and has something for all ages and abilities. It has been running for 50 years and offers a wonderful day out around some of England’s most stunning countryside, and raises thousands of pounds for vulnerable children and young people.
The Children’s Society is a national charity that supports disadvantaged children and young people who are affected by abuse, hardship or neglect. In the 50 years the Berkhamsted walk has been running, the local fundraising committee have raised over £300,000 for the charity.
Walkers who would like to take part can make a choice of three challenge options – the Fun Walk (6 miles), the Bluebell Walk (12 miles) and the Challenge Walk (18 miles). The Bluebell and Challenge Walks start and finish from the centre of the historic market town of Berkhamsted. All walks go through the picturesque Chiltern Hills and the Ashridge Estate, and walkers are likely to see Berkhamsted School, the remains of Berkhamsted Castle and carpets of flowering bluebells.
The chair of the Berkhamsted fundraising committee Ann Browning, who helps to organise the annual sponsored walk, was awarded a BEM (British Empire Medal) in the 2018 New Year’s Honours List for her charitable work. On celebrating 50 years of the Berkhamsted walk she said: “This year will be a very special walk; a new route has been devised, The Children’s Society’s Chief Executive, Matthew Reed, is to start the walk and other local celebrities are hoping to be present. We raised £10,000 from our 40th anniversary…Let’s do it again for our 50th!!”
Rachel Brockie, Relationship Manager for the region said: “The Berkhamsted Walk is always such fun and all the family can get involved. Every penny raised will make a significant difference to vulnerable young people so we’re truly grateful for all the support.”
As an added incentive, the individual walker and the group or family who raise the most sponsorship are awarded £100 of goods from The Berkhamsted Walk’s partner, Complete Outdoors.
