For those who have never tried triathlon it can seem a rather intimidating sport. Swimming, cycling and then running? My legs won’t stand that! I hear you say.
But novices need not launch themselves straight into Olympic distance events, there are many races perfectly suited to newbies. So this summer why not take the plunge (literally) and try one of these shorter distance races…
Bowood sprint Sunday (super sprint available) 3rd July
Set in the grounds of Bowood House, this race has an amazingly scenic route. The swim takes place in the Bowood Lake, before participants cycle across some of the ‘wilder’ areas of the estate. If you haven’t tried open water swimming before, this is an excellent place to start.
Chatsworth house 3rd July
This event is set in Chatworth House and the stunning surrounding countryside of the Peak District. It is perfect for first timers looking to complete a triathlon with friends and family. There are female waves and mates’ waves to athletes who would like to do the event alongside their friends. There are also plenty of children’s activities for kids at Chatsworth, including an adventure playground, so bring the whole family!
Lincolnshire Edge 10th July
The Lincolnshire Edge Tri is organised by four seasoned sportsmen who are aware how intimidating triathlons can seem for beginners and so ensure they look after their tenderfoot triathletes well. The bike course is on very quiet, undulating and scenic roads in the Lincolnshire Wolds, so suitable for people wanting to do a Standard distance triathlon for the first time. The run is flat with a little off road section around the lake to start off before running on the tarmac road that approaches Cadney Reservoir.
Wilkins kennedy Gray 24th July
This race is ideal for beginners and experienced triathletes alike. With a pool swim, flat bike course around Grays and Orsett and traffic free run around the Blackshots Park, the route is a great for newbies. It is organised by the East Essex Tri Club who are a friendly club and always encourage novice triathletes to get involved.
Snowdonia Triathlon Festival 30th & 31st July 2016
Set in Snowdonia National Park, this is one of the most stunning triathlon festivals around. Participants will plunge into the lake on the shores of Plas Y Brenin Mountain Centre, cycle across the awe inspiring Welsh country roads and run course traverses some great mountain trails.
The sprint and mini sprint are ideal routes for beginners. There will also be an aquathon for the juniors
