This year it’s the 50th anniversary since the first ever Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) event and as one of the first acts to mark the occasion the brand has released a new backpack, the Phantom 25cl.
Like the rest of the OMM’s products it’s been made specifically for trail, fell and adventure racers. It has a shape and structure that’s intended to be as stable as possible on the back when running with a load, and there are clever design techniques to help cut corners when it comes to weight, of which we’ll get to.
Notable features include its suspension system, six point harness, bladder pocket, stretch mesh on the front to give a large external storage option, and its carbon fibre frame.
All-in-all it’s full weight comes to 625g. Stripped back, it’s 425g.
And how do you strip it back? By removing the back pad, its frame and its back length adjuster.
But that doesn’t mean you have to go without these. Like a few other packs already by the OMM, the Phantom is designed to integrate with your tent. So your tent poles can be used as the bag’s frame, tent pegs replace the back adjustment pin and you can use the foam back pad that’s included as a sleeping mat.
We expect a few more exciting announcements from the brand this year to mark their half decade. We’ll keep you posted.
